Martini Hospital in Groningen, the Netherlands

The Martini Hospital is a leading clinical hospital with approximately 600 beds, within which the Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine carries out approximately 170,000 surveys on an annual basis.

Within the hospital, several different monitors and software solutions from EIZO are used.

The Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine works entirely with EIZO with only the exception of the mammography policlinic, which for historical reasons still works with a different brand of monitors. Within radiology a standard is followed whereby a set of two 3MP monitors, a combination of grayscale and color monitors, is used. For nuclear medicine, a set of two 2MP color monitors is used. The meeting rooms also feature a separate workstation with two 3MP monitors by EIZO, which allows the images to also be shown on a large-scale presentation screen in the small meeting room and a 4MP projector in the large meeting room.

Furthermore, EIZO diagnostic monitors are used within the hospital in the Department of Pulmonary Medicine and in the Emergency department. An increasing number of other applicants who assess radiology images obtain a clinical review monitor from EIZO.

What specific requirements were there for the monitors?

One requirement in choosing the monitors was that the 2MP & 3MP color monitors had to have a high luminance. Luminance levels for the Martini hospital are set to 450 cd/m2 to limit the impact of possible ambient light. In addition, we wanted a clinical review display that could be calibrated in a fully independent manner and therefore would have an integrated front sensor.

Various brands were tested and EIZO came out on top on the basis of price and quality.

Has the RadiCS software and RadiNET Pro Web Hosting solved a specific problem?

EIZO RadiCS software and RadiNET Pro Web Hosting solution have solved a management problem for us. RadiCs and RadiNET Pro Web Hosting are used in the Martini Hospital in combination with all EIZO diagnostic and clinical review monitors. They are mainly used to record reports, and to a lesser extent for monitoring service life. In addition, we have also implemented this with EIZO monitors used in the Wilhelmina Hospital Assen and the Nij Smellinghe Hospital in Drachten.

To what extent did the guarantee play a role in the selection process?

The brightness guarantee played a lesser role because the higher level of brightness which is configured cannot be guaranteed by the supplier. However, experience has shown that by following good practice of turning off the monitor when not in use, the life span of EIZO equipment is significantly higher than 5 years

Landesklinikum Waidhofen an der Thaya

A model project in Waldviertel (Lower Austria), a cooperation aimed at providing ideal patient care at several locations, has become a true pioneering project. The main goals of the project were the optimization of processes as well as minimizing effort for patients.

New concepts for digital imaging

At four locations (Waidhofen/Thaya, Horn, Gmünd, and Zwettl) investments were made that resulted in direct advantages for the patients. Specialization and intelligent connection of the locations made sure that every report can now be called off on the fly and is integrated into the treatment history immediately. Since modern diagnostics in the area of radiology make the use of digital image files essential, the implementation of PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication Systems) together with EIZO monitors provided an ideal basis. The use of EIZO monitors as a part of the PACS and RIS (Radiological Information System), which was specially designed and provided by GE, brought on a technical change of generations for the praxis of radiological diagnostics.

At the location Waidhofen/Thaya, EIZO dual screen solutions RadiForce GX340 are being used to the complete satisfaction of the radiology team. The leading radiology technologist, Susanne Schuster, speaks of the successful integration and significant change in the area of image viewing and diagnostic technology.

A  resolution of 1536 x 2048 pixels (3 megapixel) make a detailed, exact reproduction of chest and cranial images possible – whether they were created using conventional detector technique or CT – and due to the high luminance of 500 cd/m², the image quality is perfect.

Consequently, several diagnostic stations were equipped with GX340 monitors. In order to integrate a presentation seamlessly into the existing workflow of the department for radiology, a presentation room with two workstations was also equipped with EIZO RadiForce Dual LX470W. Meetings and presentations can now be visualized directly from PACS or RIS. It is also great for conferences.

The EIZO 47-inch LCD monitors with a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 (full HD) can easily depict a maximum luminance of 700 cd/m² – a quality that makes them ideal for medical imaging. Additionally, the wide angle of vision ensures that several persons can see images that are shown simultaneously in the highest quality and with only minimal color deviation.

In order to establish consistent standards, several houses were equipped with the same configuration. The use of technology from one source ensures an efficient workflow. The commitment and comprehensive preparation by Ing. Alexander Bernegger, the project manager of the PACS W4 group, GE Health Care sales manager Werner Lind, and the radiology team at the hospitals in Waldviertel made the successful realization of this project possible. The departments profit from a technology that fulfills the highest quality standards. Now patients can be treated in a more efficient way and they can use their own resources more efficiently.

The successful switch from analogue to digital x-ray becomes even more visible when one looks at the backlit box which now exists in the shadows, surrounded by EIZO monitors, as a sort of analogue back up system at Landesklinikum Waidhofen.    Health care in Waldviertel has profited enormously from the switch that has taken place in the area of imaging technology within the framework of the PACS project – a switch that was received in a very positive way.The seamless connection of the hospitals with the extramural segment and the optimum usability of EIZO monitors ensure integrated radiological care.

Ikazia Hospital in Rotterdam

The Ikazia Hospital, founded in 1965, is located in Rotterdam Zuid. It welcomes all patients regardless of where they live, but most are from the local community. The hospital runs two local outpatient clinics to bring care closer to its patients. Additionally, the Ikazia Hospital is a teaching hospital for the following specialisms: Anesthesiology, Gynecology, Surgery, Internal Medicine, Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases, and Clinical Psychology.

The hospital has been using EIZO monitors in its Radiology Department since 2009. At the end of 2015, a project was started to replace the workstations and monitors in the Radiology Department. To ensure the right solution was selected, intensive communication took place between the hospital, the supplier Varimed, and EIZO. Important factors in this were the exchange of information, advice about the design of the work- and demo space, and the development of various solutions. Part of the project involved an extensive testing set-up. The hospital compared various brands and models. Aspects playing an important role during the testing period were viewing tomosynthesis images on a high-resolution color monitor, and the displayed image quality.

Marieke van Noort- Hoeboer, Head of Radiology at Ikazia Hospital, explains why they opted for EIZO. “For many years, we’ve had a good relationship with our supplier Varimed, which is also an EIZO partner for delivering and installing monitors. The support during the entire project, the possibility of extensive testing, but also our previous experience with EIZO, were the decisive factors in selecting EIZO. Since we were already working with EIZO 3MP color monitors, we explicitly looked at an alternative based on a single monitor solution, in the form of a 6-megapixel monitor. We used the same approach for our mamma diagnostics environment, with the additional base of an even higher resolution and brightness, which is needed for displaying tomosynthesis images. The testing set-up gave us a clear impression of the quality and possibilities of the EIZO monitors. Additional matters such as connectivity with our current PACS and a solution offered by EIZO for displaying our RIS and 3D application on separate monitors, led to our selection of EIZO.”

In June 2016, the Ikazia Hospital put five EIZO RadiForce RX650s and a RadiForce RX850 into operation, in combination with two EIZO FlexScan EV2450 monitors for each workstation. Delivery and installation of the monitors was performed by Varimed.

Elisabeth-TweeSteden Ziekenhuis, Tilburg

The Elisabeth-TweeSteden Hospital in Tilburg is one of the largest top clinical training hospitals in the Netherlands. With a regional draw of almost half a million residents, in addition to patients from the North Brabant region, people from all over the Netherlands and neighboring Belgium come to this facility for medical care.

Requirements

The Elisabeth-TweeSteden Hospital wanted a centralized workstation that could handle OR and image management according to the hospital‘s specific requirements.

Solution

In close cooperation between the project managers and EIZO, a solution was developed that met all the hospital‘s requirements.

Customized for its specific OR, a wall console with four monitors was designed that not only visually fits in very well with the overall image, but also meets all functional requirements.

In the middle, both 24-inch monitors offer the option of PACS image viewing. Both 23-inch monitors outside allow the user to operate the OR management and control software – through the comfort of touchscreens. The connection to the PC and video management components to the external technology room is established by the customer-specific configuration of technology inside the Surgical Panel.
